Here is a sampling of three interesting and recent cell phone related news articles.

1. Samsung’s new cell phone is for the jet set world traveler.

On September 13th, Samsung and SK Telecom unveiled its international cell phone (Model: SCH-V920) that is capable of handling 3(CDMA, European GSM, Japan’s JCDMA) system signals, allowing roaming in ninety different countries around the world. This is the first time anyone has come up with world roaming cell phone.

SCH-V90 comes in gray, bright red, silver and white colors with price tag of about 0.00. See full story at http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,127117-page,1-c,cellphones/article.html

2. Beware of “Blinko”

Peg Lee doesn’t understand what cell phone wallpaper is, but she’s paying for it. It costs her .95 a month.

Each and every month, charges from an Italian company — doing business in the United States as Blinko — for products Lee neither wanted or received are on her Verizon Wireless phone bill. Wallpaper, ringtones and other downloadable product charges keep showing up on the phone bills , despite many attempts to cancel the service, Lee said.

Blinko, also known as Buongiorno USA, is being investigated by the Florida Attorney General’s Office and a national class-action lawsuit.

Calls and e-mails to Blinko, which has its U.S. headquarters in Miami, FL were not answered. See full story at http://www.azstarnet.com/business/145878

3. Bad news: Cellular providers are ranked number one in complaints-even beating out airlines!

Maybe it’s a -a-month charge from Verizon for Roadside Assistance that you can not remember requesting. Or maybe it is an “upgrade fee” that Cingular Wireless forgot to mention when you bought that new Motorola Razr phone. Or maybe you’re just upset about dropped calls.

Whatever the cause, many are peeved with their cell phone company. Consumers are mad, and the lawsuits are hitting the fans. According to the BBB, cell phone companies drew 30,483 complaints last year to become the top-ranked industry for grievances. The most common complaints: inaccurate bills, inadequate customer service, and deceptive contract terms. Cell phone companies were the subject of more complaints than such perennially unpopular businesses as car dealerships, hotels, retail outlets, and insurance companies, BBB statistics show.

“I believe that the rise in customer dissatisfaction in the cell phone industery is due to the fact that the cell phones do not offer nearly perfect service as land line phones do and people are comparing their cellular experiences with much more reliable land line services.” states Bill Cannon, CEO of Westerncell.com. “Also, people are adjusting to the Cingular-AT&T Wireless and Sprint-Nextel mergers.” See full story at http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,126939-page,1-

SellyourCell.com Announces What Not to Do with Used Cell Phones

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) September 7, 2006

Wireless industry studies show that most U.S. residents have at least one used cell phone at lying around their home. An Orlando based company, SellyourCell.com (www.sellyourcell.com), has some very good suggestions for how to make money by recyling them.

As good of an idea as SellyourCell.com has, we thought we’d first contrast it with some of the more bizarre things people have reportedly done with used cell phones.

What NOT to do with a Used Cell Phone:

Don’t give it to a pet dog: In 2004 the Andolou news agency reported that a dog in Turkey swallowed his owner’s cell phone. The owner, a service station attendant, thought that a customer had taken it until he dialed the number and much to his chagrin discovered his pet was ringing. The dog “returned” the phone the next day.

Don’t give it your significant other during an argument: In December 2005, Blue Springs, MO, police were called to the home of a man who said his girlfriend was having trouble breathing. Paramedics discovered a complete cell phone lodged in her throat, which was later removed by surgeons. There is some debate in this case as to whether the woman placed it in her throat intentionally to hide her recent call list, as the boyfriend claims, or it was placed there against her will by her boyfriend, which she contends. In any event, in does not appear that cell phones are beneficial to lover’s quarrels.

Don’t disobey when it says you’ve had enough to drink: LG Electronics will be launching the LP4100 cell phone in the U.S. shortly which is equipped with, yes, a breathalyzer. LG says they have sold 200,000 of them in Korea and they expect it will be a hit here too. Interestingly the phone will also allow users to block certain phone numbers from being dialed if their blood alcohol level is too high. Maybe the couple above could have used this.

Don’t use it as body armor… unless you really have to: In January 2006 police in Crystal River, FL reported that John Stephens was shot by an unknown person, and that the cell phone in his shirt pocket stopped the bullet and saved his life. Mr. Stephens may need a new cell phone, but we bet he’s not complaining too much.

What TO do with Used Cell Phones:

To answer this we approached Keith Ori, CEO of SellyourCell.com, the popular online cell phone recycling company.

“What to do with used cell phones? That’s pretty simple; sell them! It’s good for the environment and you get paid for doing it,” Ori says, noting that his company, SellyourCell.com, pays between and 0 per cell phone, and provides free shipping to customers.

Ori says you can go to SellyourCell.com and get a price quote for your cell phone in 3 easy steps. If you agree with the quote, SellyourCell.com will send you a box to ship your phone in and have a check in your hand within 30 days.

“All things considered,” Ori says with a smile, “I think it’s a much better idea than letting your dog ‘recycle’ it.”

We couldn’t agree more.

499CellPhones.com Promotes Traffic through Collective Keyword Popularity

499CellPhones.com Promotes Traffic through Collective Keyword Popularity

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) July 31, 2006

499CellPhones.com today marketed a response to Joel Comm’s (JC) highly successful 500words.com. Far from being a “copy cat” — there’s a lot more to the 499CellPhones marketing story than meets the eye.

Milliondollarhomepage.com inspired JC’s site, which chose to use keywords (which can be indexed), instead of images, which cannot. Both sites were successful with traffic, though both could have further optimized their sites. In the latter case, generalized keywords (i.e., “notice” or “sleep”) simply ignored the value of keyword popularity. Both were apparently oblivious to the synergy of hosting hundreds of conceptually-related, popular keywords in close proximity to one another.

According to Steve Maclin, trend spotter for 499CellPhones.com, this site remedies these oversights by “…focusing on the most popular keywords used in a search for phones. As a result, instead of attracting visitors with merely passing interests, 499CellPhone sponsors are afforded the benefit of receiving a higher percentage of those who have demonstrated specific interests in cell phone products/ services.

On 499CellPhones.com, you select from the most popular keywords displayed on the page and create a link to your website for a small fee. The keywords are all over the map, so anyone should be able to find one or more that’s consistent with their website content. Most keywords are related to the cellphone industry, but you can submit your own for an additional fee.

You can select the following features to make your keywords stand out:

Small, medium, large or jumbo font size;

Bold, italics, underline, overline;

Multiple colors;

Mouseover text that appears when the mouse is rolled over your keyword.

Once a keyword is claimed, it’s gone forever, or at least for the next two years that the site will remain online. That means the high-traffic keywords will go rather quickly.

This is a great idea which has already caught the attention of many people who will be clicking through to sponsors’ links. And, since our popular keywords will be used to promote our sponsors’ sites, there may be an increased search engine benefit that images or generalized links cannot provide.

Taking Your Cell Phone Abroad – LetsTalk.com?s Five Tips For Staying Connected Internationally

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 22, 2006

Staying in touch during international travel used to be a major chore for travelers. Now, due to the growth of cell phones, people expect to stay connected in more places than ever, and carriers have worked to make traveling with a cell phone easier. With the right cell phone and the right service plan, staying in contact can be easy and affordable from almost anywhere.

But while cell phones have made it easier for travelers to reach loved ones and colleagues, there is still a maze of different service plans, wireless networks, and usability concerns to consider. Delly Tamer, founder and CEO of LetsTalk.com, offers these tips for international travel with a cell phone:

Bring the right gear. If you’re traveling internationally, you may need an adapter and a voltage inverter in order to use your cell phone charger. Plugging your charger directly into a plug with different voltage could ruin your cell phone. If you plan to use your cell phone to access the Internet, you may need additional hardware to connect your cell phone to your laptop. Pack the right accessories to avoid headaches.

For more information, visit LetsTalk’s accessories page:

http://www.letstalk.com/accessories.htm

Know your phone. Cell phones from T-Mobile or Cingular typically use GSM networks, which are also used in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. If you have an unlocked tri- or quad-band GSM cell phone (like the Nokia N90), you may be able to bring it abroad and buy a new SIM card to get cheaper minutes while you’re away.

Sprint and Verizon cell phones work with CDMA networks, which can also be found throughout most of North and South America. It’s likely you can use your existing phone in those countries – just be mindful of high per-minute rates! If you plan on traveling to countries that don’t use CDMA and have a CDMA-only phone, you can rent a cell phone from Sprint or Verizon and keep your existing phone number while you travel.

For more information, visit LetsTalk’s wireless information page:

http://www.letstalk.com/about/wireless1.htm

Check your plan. While keeping your US cell phone number on international trips cuts costs for people at home who want to call you, it’s likely you still have to pay for those incoming minutes, and the price may vary if you don’t get an international plan from your carrier before you leave. Check your service plan and contact your carrier to get reasonable rates before you leave – that way you’ll avoid phone bill shock when you return home.

Know the law. Many countries have introduced hands-free laws for drivers talking on cell phones, so if you rent a car, make sure you obey the law or you could be on the receiving end of a hefty fine.

Don’t take Bluetooth from strangers. Bluetooth is more prevalent in other countries – especially in Europe. If you have a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone (like a Motorola RAZR), switch off Bluetooth when it’s not in use. Otherwise, your cell phone may receive unwanted messages or be exposed to viruses from another Bluetooth cell phone within range.

Cell Phones Valued at More Than $300 Million Tucked Away Every Month

Ocala, FL (PRWEB) January 19, 2006

Last year, according to the Consumer Electronics Association, U.S. consumers purchased some 104 million cell phones for a total of .5 billion. Over the next 18 months those cell phones, all 104 million, will be retired.

CTIA – The Wireless Association puts the total number of U.S. cell phone users over 200 million. The industry estimates that the average U.S. wireless user upgrades their old cell phone every 18 months. That means consumers purchase 11 million new cell phones every month.

That’s a lot of cell phones. But what makes those numbers even more dramatic is that many of those fancy new cell phones will be replacing older model phones – phones that work fine but don’t have all the bells and whistles of the shiny new models.

So what happens to all those old-model cell phones, anyway? James Mosieur, chief executive officer of RMS Communications Group Inc., hopes they find their way into his mailbox.

RMS is one of the nation’s leading recycler and re-marketer of old cell phones. The company actually pays cash to people who sell their old phones to RMS via their website, www.CellForCash.com.

“For almost every new cell phone purchased, one is retired” said Mosieur. “We estimate that over 0 million worth of cell phones are collecting dust when they should be collecting interest.”

Surveys suggest that less than 10% of U.S. consumers dispose of their old cell phones either by selling them or through other recycling methods. This leaves over 10 million cell phones to pile up every month in the homes of America.

“Currently our average pay out per cell phone is just over ” said Mosieur, “when you multiply that by the number of cell phones retired every month, that’s a huge number.”

“The numbers say it all-the consumer electronics industry is hot,” said Gary Shapiro, the Consumer Electronics Association’s president and chief executive officer. According to CEA, wireless handset sales will reach billion in the U.S. next year.

The growing problem has caught the attention of lawmakers across the country. Several states are considering legislation mandating cell phone recycling. California is the first state to pass such a law. Beginning this July it will be unlawful for a retailer to sell a cell phone in the State of California unless they have a comprehensive recycling program in place.

“CellForCash.com offers a complete consumer solution” said Mosieur. “Our program satisfies the needs of the consumer, the retailer and the legislators.”

CellForCash.com Puts out Emergency 911 Call

OCALA, Fla. (PRWEB) July 5, 2005

CellForCash.com, which pays cash for used cell phones and then re-markets them around the world, put out a call today for more cell phones that it can donate for free to law enforcement agencies and affiliated groups through its successful 911 Cell Phone Bank program.

Individuals can go to the www.CellForCash.com website, print out a mailing label and then send in their phone.

CellForCash.com now donates around 1,000 cell phones each month under the program, but demand is on the rise. Besides the phones, the program also provides participating agencies with much-needed cash. The agencies also provide the emergency phones to shelters, victims of abuse, and senior citizens in need.

Â?Since we started this program a little more than a year ago, law enforcement agencies have enthusiastically partnered with us to get emergency cell phones into the hands of people who need them,Â? said James Mosieur, chief executive officer of RMS Communications Group Inc., CellForCash.comÂ?s parent company. Â?We need the public to send us more phones so we can keep up with the increasing demand.Â?

CellForCash.com established its 911 Cell Phone Bank in May 2004 as a means for supplying law enforcement agencies and other organizations with emergency cell phones and cash. Since then, more than 120 law enforcement agencies and other groups have signed up with the program, and CellForCash.com has provided the agencies with thousands of cell phones.

Kathy Connolly, a victimsÂ? advocate with the Leon County SheriffÂ?s Office in Florida, said it took her awhile to believe that the 911 Cell Phone Bank really worked as claimed.

Â?We in law enforcement are pretty skeptical folks, so it took a while to convince us that they would keep us in free cell phones, actually send us cash for the phones we collect from members of the community, and that there was no catch,Â? Connolly said. Â?ItÂ?s like going to the grocery store and being paid to take home your groceries.Â?

Connolly said her community received scores of free cell phones and several hundred dollars in cash under the program. As a result, she nominated CellForCash.com for her departmentÂ?s Community Service Award earlier this year.

Currently, more than 1,000 are being shipped to the agencies every month by CellForCash.com. In addition, CellForCash.com has also provided the agencies with 5,000 in cash.

Here is how the program works:

Participating agencies collect cell phones from their communities and send them postage-paid to CellForCash.com. CellForCash.com then determines the “best use” for each phone; phones with high market value are converted to cash. For every phone converted to cash, CellForCash.com donates one working 911 cell phone from its inventory.

Cell phones best suited for emergency use are constantly added to the 911 emergency phone inventory. Phones that are unusable or damaged are responsibly recycled.

Participating agencies receive the cash value of re-marketable cell phones AND have access to the inventory pool of 911 cell phones.

Â?New law enforcement agencies are signing up for the 911 Cell Phone Bank program every week because they recognize the value that it offers to their communities and to the citizens who are in need of emergency phones,Â? Mosieur said. Â?WeÂ?d be delighted to have more agencies come on board.Â?

Additional information about the 911 Cell Phone Bank program can be found by visiting www.CellForCash.com and clicking Â?911 Cell Phone BankÂ? at the bottom of thepage.

Cell Phones in Education: Resource or Distraction?

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 10, 2010

What should be the roll of mobile devices in the learning process? On one hand, devices like cell phones have been targeted for enabling students to cheat, text, and otherwise act irresponsibly during time when they should be studying. On the other hand, mobile devices can help students with quick research and provide a vital communication link to their parents, classmates, and even teachers.

Cell phone use by students while at school has been a particularly controversial topic. Many educators, tutors and teachers argue that cell phones are a distraction and should be banned. As recently as a few years ago, high schools around the country prohibited them entirely. Today, a more moderate philosophy prevails, and most high schools allow cell phone use in the halls between classes. (Middle schools still generally ban them.) It seems school administrators have accepted that mobile communication is an integral part of our society and that teachers should educate students on appropriate cell phone conduct rather than try to eliminate cell phones entirely.

To provide additional data to the discussion, WyzAnt Tutoring recently polled approximately 2,000 tutors from around the country to field their opinions. When responding to the prompt, “How do student cell phones impact the effectiveness of your tutoring lessons,” 44% of tutors responded that cell phones had no impact on the lesson whatsoever. Moreover, 14% responded that cell phones were a great resource for students. One math tutor noted that, “The ability to quickly look up math formulas and examples on my smartphone is an invaluable tool during study time.” An equally compelling argument can be made against cell phone use, however, with roughly 42% of respondents claiming that “text messages and phone calls interrupt tutoring sessions on a regular basis.”

According to a recent study by the CTIA Wireless Association, over 90% of the US population now subscribes to cell phone service. Even young children are joining the wireless revolution; over 20% of 6-9 year olds and 60% of 10-14 year olds own a cell phone according to C&R Research.

This trend will only increase, and it’s up to parents and teachers to balance the pros and cons of using cell phones as part of the learning process. While there is no single solution, perhaps there are lessons to be learned from the early internet era. The internet was at first seen as a new frontier with dangers lurking behind each click, whereas today schools and parents have universally embraced the web as a medium for research, education and efficient communication. With appropriate safeguards and reasonable policies, perhaps cell phones and web-enabled smart phones can run a similar course.

WyzAnt.com is a marketplace where qualified instructors offer private lessons in academic subjects, test preparation, computer instruction, musical instruments, foreign languages and more. Thousands of people each day use WyzAnt to find qualified local tutors.
